Harvesting taters video

I've put up a new video showing the potatoes being harvested, you can see it here: http://green-house.tv/profile/DonMacKeen. I've tried putting it up on the greenhouse video page but have had no luck. -Or, even easier, see it below!

Them tatties is a-comin!

Ok, Mrs George pointed out that in Scotland the accepted term is "tatties" for potatoes, but being from the States I tend to use "taters" - well, call them what you will our potatoes are showing signs of life! Little bushes are popping up all over, so that's great. And shoots are coming up in the garlic patch as well, though nothing from the asparagus. But my question is: when should I "hill" my potatoes/taters/tatties? And do I have to build little walls around the potatoes? We didn't do it la… Continue

No taters yet

Well, the students planted the potatoes a few weeks back, and nothing yet. The butterfly garden is looking alright, our leafmould container is still standing, though someone removed one of the posts. Anyone else in the UK tried planting potatoes yet? Any luck?

Planted taters!

I work with students at a community college in Glasgow, Scotland, and we have reclaimed two garden plots in the Gorbals neighbourhood. We've started a butterfly garden in one plot (haven't seen any butterflies yet though) and we've just planted potatoes in the other one. Tomorrow (hopefully!) we will be constructing a leafmould container, and if I remember to video it I'll put it up here.

Any chance I can join the Gardeners of Scotland??? I don't exactly qualify as I am 30 miles south of Newcastle but feel more affinity with the Scots than the blummin' Southerners.

You say taters and I say tatties. Have faith. They will grow. Mind you, if it keeps raining they may rot. Hey ! Its all good fertiliser.

Hey Don,

Regarding the butterflies - we planted butterfly bushes (I believe the "real" name is Buddleia) - definitely a hit with the butterflies and the hummingbirds.

Have a nice weekend,
Matt
