About:
I live with my husband and two boys in a small village in Oxfordshire, UK. We grow a lot of our own vegetables, fruit and flowers on an allotment, keep chickens and have recently become beekeepers. I make wine, sew and do other crafty things. I love reading, photography and exploring our countryside. I'm an Open University student and work in a charity bookshop. Trying to be green here....

Bees!!

Been asked to write something about bees and bee-keeping and its been on the to- do list for ages, in part as I've tried to do this before and it ate my post and life got in the way. So third time lucky I hope Some background. We've been bee-keepers for about 18months. Its not a difficult hobby on the practical front but there is a fair bit of theory to learn and a good sense of observation needed so that by watching and looking in the hive you can work out just what needs to be done when. Afte… Continue

We've got new chickens!

We were down to one chicken - Henrietta! who had gone in to retirement and hadn't laid for ages which is fine but I did object to feeding a chicken and buying eggs! So we got three youngesters to go with her - Prue, Winnie and Mabel. The plan when introducing new chickens is to separate them until dusk and then sneak the newcomers in to the hen house and they all wake up in the morning and live in peace and harmony. It sort of works... there was still some pecking. Henrietta very keen to point o… Continue

so ,quick techie question - how do you upload photos to a blog page?

My machine is just going in to a sulk and either freezing or as last time (once I'd writen a long long page all about bees ) it refered me to a blooper page and said uh oh.. and lost my posting!! I'm not a numpty (well not usually) so what am I doing wrong? Most of my photos are on the other computer got down here by wireless LAN and I thought it didn't like that so transfered the photo to this machine but it still ground to a halt. What now?

Community litter pick

Well it is my husband's birthday today but we went on a village litter pick this afternoon. What a lucky man to have that as a birthday treat, huh! So about 14 of us met at a central point of the village this afternoon. We'd got high visibility vests and those grab thingys from the council plus bags to put it in. We must have collected a good 16 full bin bags of pure rubbish. Quote from my son ' People must really not like the planet!' How true that is! What a mess to clear up - what is the poin… Continue

Introducing Us

Ok so after 3 attempts to upload photos on to this (and failing - I wonder why my screen just went in to a long sulk? )but still we shall write unillustrated then! I thought that I'd better expand slightly on my introduction paragraph. Who we are and what we do (or aim to do). I live in a small old village in west Oxfordshire. It only has about 500 people living here. No shops but a pub (or bar for you?) run more like a restaurant, a school and a church. Set on a hill there are wonderful views… Continue

Hi Julie,

I wonder if you wouldn't mind writing a bit about your beekeeping when you have some time. I've often thought that might be an interesting venture, though I admit I don't know much about it.

Take care,
Matt
