This looks like a great fall recipe, I will try it with wild rice (less carbs) for diabetic.

I've never made this with black beans before. when I was a newlywed I got a load of red beans&rice going in the crock pot and was going to do the rice when we got home, but hubby talked me into adding the rice directly to the pot while cooking - he also talked me into cooking the entire bag of slow cooking rice. we got home to a crockpot with the lid lifted off but the rice was still hard ... I've never been able to get hubby to try it again. never thought of changing the beans. my recipe came from the Frugal Gourmet a long time ago ... called for worstershire & a stick of butter.
