Cindy Fallsen storing canned goods

It is exciting that Christmas in coming. It is time to put up the Memphis Patio Furniture and prepare the house for winter. As we prepare to store our canned items, I am wondering if they will do OK in the basement. It gets pretty cold down there. Would installing a Basement DehumidifierContinue

Jess The Turnip Truck (a chapter from last winter)

In the deep midwinter, I am getting tired of root vegetables. I can only cook rutabagas, turnips, parsnips, carrots, and potatoes so many different ways. Roasted, pureed, French fried, buttered, braised, whizzed into soup, I’ve exhausted my repertoire. In an attempt to break out of my rut, I made a Dutch dish… Continue

Stuccolow Milwaukee Public Market and Fine Furnishings and Fine Craft Show

Since Jim and I have a 100 year old house, we try to decorate it in the style it was built and designed. Which mostly means a lot of craftsman and arts and crafts style pieces. I heard about the Fine Furnishing show in Milwaukee and thought we should check it out. Wow! There are some very talented artist out there. The Fine Furnishing Show will be in Providence Road Island on 10/23 and if you're in the area check it out http://www.finefurnishingsshow.com/ We saw pieces that were made from vene… Continue

Stuccolow Himalayan Salt Block Cooking

Jim and I were at the Milwaukee Public Market and found at the Spice House store Himalayan Salt blocks. These blocks are used for cooking, keeping food cold, and just decoration. The blocks are pink and look like rosy quartz. As the food cooks it picks up the saltyness of the block. The block that we purchased is 18 inches by 6 inches by 3 inches thick and you can cook on it! So far, I haven't tried any cold goodness, but have cooked beef, chicken, and beets on the block. You can freeze the blo… Continue

Ginger Stupid Human Tricks

hubby has been working on the green house in little spurts lately - time constraints and helping his folks out with their property on the weekends hasn't been leaving a lot of time so he just got the sills on top of the walls yesterday. Well - he was planning on taking a couple of days off this week ... but a boo-boo might put his plans on hold. He was working with a nail gun and it misfired -- he had on all the safety gear ... heavy boots, thick pants, safety glasses, and gloves. They should… Continue

Melissa First Silver Queen Sweet Corn

My poor, neglected garden at the park does not give up. It keeps producing all on it’s own. I set it up with a rain barrel and battery operated soaker hose timers, but still I only visit 2 to 3 times a week, spending less than 30 minutes each time. What a treat to visit this evening and come home with about 15 pounds of produce. The most exciting was my first two ears of sweet corn. I have not grown my own sweet corn in over 20 years. The sound of them snapping off the stalk took me back to my… Continue

Stuccolow I have a confession to make.

I'm a horrible gardener. I can't follow simple rules. I have no patience. All winter long I dream up these extravagant plans and find in reality it doesn't always work. I had some compost that hadn't quite matured and I had Jim build me a raised bed so I could dispose of it properly. Then I just took some topsoil that we had accumulated under the deck and covered it up. Wow did it explode with stuff.

Ginger here we go again ....

Well - 2 more inches of rain ... in two days. Yesterday we had a tornado wisp thru our big metropolitan area and it did quite a bit of damage, but it didn't look like it would have been more than an F0 or F1, but we will have to see what the weather service says - at least they finally admitted it was a tornado, because at first they were trying to say it was just big winds...but there was just too much photo evidence .... probably they were trying to explain why warnings didn't go out un… Continue

Ginger Be Careful What You Wish For

So while we were on vacation we got 3 1/2 inches (see previous post), then this last Saturday we got another 2 1/2 inches .... Now today they (the weather bureau) are predicting another 3 inches before the latest front moves out completely - so we are under a flood advisory. I think they are a tad late. We have mushrooms popping up in the yard everywhere (even around the healthy trees) and trees are having their roots exposed as well. Had we waited and planted the corn at the end of July it wo… Continue

stalwartmoonpie Still Alive

I've been away for a bit. Life has been stressful and I've been a bit down. So much keeps going wrong with the house. I've been pretty mentally and emotionally exhausted. Through the rougher times I make sure that I keep working on the garden, appreciating the chickens, and keep learning - however small I may think it is. Things can wait - (ugh like just finding out the plumbing to my tub has come disconnected under the house - just using the other one until I can get to it) - there are a few th… Continue

Ginger like a bad riddle ...

What do you get when you cross the family vacation with 3 1/2 inches of rain in less than 24 hours? heck - less than 2 hours? You get this:

That is the back side of the green house hubby is working on - and it doesn't show the mud slide that pushed behind… Continue

Stuccolow The Planning never Ends. Garden 2010

We'll have flying cars, and automatic weeders, and water that sprouts from the ground with out the use of pipes. The Future will be Fantastic! Ok, so the Future will prolly be just like today, but everything will be more expensive. Community Garden Bed: Over the winter, I want to plant onions and garlic. I'm thinking about dedicating the bed to slower growing veg, like cabbage, brussels sprouts, and broccoli. Along with root vegs. My space at home is more vertical friendly than horizontal. At… Continue

Melissa Zucchini & Sweet Potato Pancakes

I made zucchini bread this morning and had a little extra zucchini. Who doesn’t right? I had a nice organic sweet potato and fresh local farm eggs, so did my best to make something edible. Today’s experiment was zucchini & sweet potato pancakes. Glad to report they were delicious!

Melissa I Made Zucchini Bread!

I finally made zucchini bread today! I love to cook, but am not much of a baker. I chose a good recipe from FoodTV.com (thank you Paula Deen), took my time, and now have 1 beautiful large loaf, 2 cute small loaves, and 2 not so pretty tiny loaves. The “tiny” loaves were baked in very old toy pans, so I think that was the problem.
