Thanks for your comment from WAAAAAAAAY back about sending my stuff to Benin - I did not know the comment was there. How cool that you liked my stuff and sent it out! Hopefully, soon I will be able to simply point you to my book on Amazon.com, but until then (my agent is working on it), I'll post a chapter or two. Best, Jess.

Thank you Sandy, for the words of encouragement on both my compost bin and my community education. Because I work for the newspaper and have a regular column on green living it may be a bit easier to find an audience. Putting it all into practice will prove to be a different story. But, if only one person takes heed......

Well she must be using a "Potjieko" which is an Afican style cast iron pot. Tell her hi for me and check out my potjieko article.

Hi Sandy..right now I am still making jam (from my Marion Berries) like crazy and plums are on....so I am making plum jam and I have a prolific Fig tree that has inspired Fig Chutney. I am doing a red pepper relish. I have pears that will be next. We have had a strange season here in the pacific northwest...not the usual timing for my crops. I am under the gun to keep things moving before that first frost in October! I am sure its the same with you.

Hi...I am really interested to know what you put into your salsa? It looks beautiful. The sauce with the different colored tomatoes...what did you put in those sauces? I am still trying to figure out what to do with my tomatoes now...

thanks,
Margaret

Hey, Sandy.
I love your kitchen-in-progress. I need to buy my house so I can fix the kitchen. If I do, I think yours will be a leading inspiration!

You mentioned on one of my blog comments not having space and sun for a food garden. I'm not so sure! All that rock work you did in front would support a very nice-looking mixed garden/potager type thing. Herbs, nice looking veggies and fruits, mixed with your ornamentals - could get you quite a bit.

Also, 1/2 acre is a lot of space! My veggie garden is 29x29 feet, including paths and the new (but as yet unphotographed) bordering herb garden. Only 5 4x4 beds were planted this year (the rest was created only recently, for use next year), yet I got more basil than I can keep up with, lots of other herbs, a fair bit of garlic and onions (both didn't get very large, but in terms of pounds of produce per square foot and flavor, impressive), about 10 quarts of strawberries (in the first year!), and peppers and tomatoes are just not coming into harvest time. My blueberries and sand cherries have been planted as ornamentals, and are too young to produce fruit (well, one cherry).

Don't worry so much about the shade either. I don't have any sunny areas. Shade is good for greens and many herbs. So go with those, and trade for stuff you can't grow so much of. I don't get as big a yield on things as my neighbors. However, they've both already torn out their gardens, and mine is in high season now. I think that's good, because I don't have A/C, and would much rather be canning now, when it's not so hot out, than the height of August.

So, go for it! Grow food!

Unfortunately, my lovely lab, Honey, has gone to the big doghouse in the sky about a year ago. I do have 2 kitties though. My husband absent-mindedly keeps letting our boy cat, CJ, out into the yard. So far, we have not had incident between him and the chicks. I am out in the yard very frequently though. I keep an eye on him. He seems more interested in catching voles than having anything to do with the chicks. If you check out my pictures, you will see CJ and his voles.

I had 4 yards of loam/organic compost mix dumped. 1 yard per bed. I mixed about 1/3 bag of peat moss and about 1/2 or so of a 50lb. bag of playsand into each bed with the yard of loam/compost. Being from New England, It doesn't hurt to mix in a few cups of lime to sweeten it up a bit. I also use an organic fertilizer from Espoma. I use either Gardentone or Planttone.

Thanks! Yes, SFG, but maybe not at it's best. Somethings I planted too closely, a rookie mistake. Especially the swiss chard, beans, and lettuce. But I am amazed at the number of different veggies etc you can plant with SFG. BTW, I like your compost bins! And agree on the stachys - I give mine away like crazy.

December and baking has begun........

Here in Ohio winter usually comes on in spurts. It gives the body and land time to adjust and get ready for January, deep winter. This year we were slammed into the deep freeze and the door was locked! Here on the northern eastern shores of Lake Erie the snow blower has already had a workout. The little pond is covered in ice. We have gone through a cord of wood and at last count out of the last 21 days 19 have snowed. I just checked the thermometer and it's a balmy 16 degrees with a stiff wind.… Continue

November ......... and feeling ready for winter.

A month has gone ......... again. Farmer's Markets are over for the year; my market friends and I are reduced to emails and garden jokes online. We wait in anticipation for seed catalogs.

For the first time in a long time I have time to sit and look out the window at the birds over hot tea with the wood stove crackling. The dog lays on my feet under the table and the deep sense of satisfaction is awash over my being.
We made it, we beat the snow one more year. It has come early this year, 6 inc… Continue

Just when I thought Canning season was over.......

Letter written to my daughter in Nepal........

Dear Rachael,

It's over, it's done! The canner is packed away in the basement, the leftover lids hermetically sealed in plastic waiting for next season. All the shelves have
nice clean newspaper lining this years additions. For Pete-sake, I did the happy dance around the kitchen after the last jar was lovingly put on the
shelf in the bowels of the house known as the.......... fruit cellar. Only Mothers, mice & spiders venture there.

I thought… Continue

Last day of September.........

and where did that month go....
I keep a daily journal just for that reason. Yesterday was spent chopping and digging to get the last tree stump out of the ground. I had to think when did I start this project........ July 9th!!! What have you been doing? I had to go back and look at my journal or just walk around the house and yard.
Canning is done; the vault is stocked for winter.
300 bowls are made and packed ready for a Peace Corp fundraiser in November,
Children & friends have visited an… Continue
