That sounds so great!

I'm not a great record keeper, but I have kept a garden journal for the last three years. I need to go over it and see what I've done and what I will do. It's kind of exciting!

Flash forward to September 2010: "Hmm... I feel like I was supposed to remember something." At least that's how it would work out in my head. This past summer was a disaster for my gardening. Last fall I didn't buy seed garlic. Come February we ...

Mid October we had a nasty little frost. It was enough for me to stop planting and start winterizing. I pulled up some whispy, leggy arugla and mixed greens out of the lettuce patch and called it done. Well, I missed some seeds and have a couple ...

If you have lots of leaves, shred them up with the lawnmower or the vacuum part of a blower/vac if you have one to reduce the volume and increase the surface area of the pieces - thus speeding up the composting process. Layer or mix together the l...

About:
Hello! We live in a 100 year old house with a 3 year old garden. We also live with a couple of dogs, some cats, and a bunch of vintage dishes-mostly fiestaware and mostly packed away in the basement while we do work on our house.

If having 9 tomato plants is wrong, then I don't want to be right!

Milwaukee Public Market and Fine Furnishings and Fine Craft Show

Since Jim and I have a 100 year old house, we try to decorate it in the style it was built and designed. Which mostly means a lot of craftsman and arts and crafts style pieces. I heard about the Fine Furnishing show in Milwaukee and thought we should check it out.

Wow! There are some very talented artist out there. The Fine Furnishing Show will be in Providence Road Island on 10/23 and if you're in the area check it out http://www.finefurnishingsshow.com/

We saw pieces that were made from vene… Continue

Himalayan Salt Block Cooking

Jim and I were at the Milwaukee Public Market and found at the Spice House store Himalayan Salt blocks. These blocks are used for cooking, keeping food cold, and just decoration. The blocks are pink and look like rosy quartz. As the food cooks it picks up the saltyness of the block. The block that we purchased is 18 inches by 6 inches by 3 inches thick and you can cook on it!

So far, I haven't tried any cold goodness, but have cooked beef, chicken, and beets on the block. You can freeze the blo… Continue

I have a confession to make.

I'm a horrible gardener. I can't follow simple rules. I have no patience. All winter long I dream up these extravagant plans and find in reality it doesn't always work.

I had some compost that hadn't quite matured and I had Jim build me a raised bed so I could dispose of it properly. Then I just took some topsoil that we had accumulated under the deck and covered it up. Wow did it explode with stuff.

The Planning never Ends. Garden 2010

We'll have flying cars, and automatic weeders, and water that sprouts from the ground with out the use of pipes. The Future will be Fantastic!

Ok, so the Future will prolly be just like today, but everything will be more expensive.

Community Garden Bed:
Over the winter, I want to plant onions and garlic. I'm thinking about dedicating the bed to slower growing veg, like cabbage, brussels sprouts, and broccoli. Along with root vegs. My space at home is more vertical friendly than horizontal.

I love beans.

As my Gram Marianne would say,

"Beans Beans!
The Magical Fruit!
The More You Eat!
The More You Toot!
The More You Toot!
The Better You Feel!
So Eat Beans At Every Meal!"

Gram was not some hippy farming Grandmom. She lived in a high rise over looking Belmont Harbor in Chicago. And I don't really think she ever made us beans. Made a hell of a tzimmis, which my stepmom still makes at the holidays.

Anyways, I love Beans. Black beans, Italian White Beans, Pink Pinto Beans, and just the other day I… Continue

I just put about 2 tsp. of soap to a quart spray bottle of water. Some would say to put in canola oil for stick effect so it doesn't wash off. I have heard a cup should do. Here is a link to a recipe.

I am ignoring my house for a while. We're remodeling the kitchen-so to speak. Nothing fun like new cabinets or counter tops. Just tearing down a wall and putting in some doors. It's a huge mess and I just can't stand it any more!

So I moved on to the garden. Yea! I have a 16'x5' fenced veg garden. This year I tried lasanga gardening. In the fall, I stomped down everything that was left in the garden, covered it with newspaper, peat, manure, and more compost (my own compost thank you very much)!

I was so suprised to dig down and find just wonderful dark, rich compost. Most of the newspaper degraded into little pieces that I've tossed on to my pathway. This way, I hope to add mulch or chips to the pathway and keep weeds or odd randow plants from coming up.

9 days and counting till I can really trust the weather!
