Hi Neil--Is it possible that you just sowed it too thickly? Another possibility is that you sowed it too early in the fall and gave the roots a head start to beef up before the cold weather set in (depends on your zone, of course). I read somewhere…

Hi Matt--I've used the red mulch and was impressed with the yield and pleased with the weed protection. I don't have my tomato plants in the ground yet (shame on me, I'm a month behind this year!) but will be using the red mulch again along with a p…

Hi. I live in Northern Virginia and planted my lettuce seeds earlier this month (April) and they are coming in nicely. My onion sets are also in and doing fine, as are the seed potatoes I just planted. My garlic that I planted last fall is doing gre…

Thanks, Leon! I have seen that book, someone posted the link for it a few months ago in the forum. It's a great read, lots of good, timeless information!

Thanks for the info and pictures! Pictures confirmed that I've not encountered these beans before. I might have to try them this year. Any special requirements for soil or light, or do they pretty much grow like any old bean?

Me loves pottery. Thanks for letting me know where Seagrove is. Silly me I was looking near the coast. My husband has lived in Cary over 25 years. When we are out and about he will say things like this. This use to be way out in the country. There…

March 15th already! Time is zipping by. If it ever stops raining (day 4 or so now?), I'm going to get out there with my camera and post some progress shots on my outdoor seed trays. I checked on them just after the snow storm two weeks ago and I had…

Profile Information

About:
Amateur gardener, professional weeder.

I try to squeeze in as much time in my yard as I can between working for the Department of the Navy and being a full-time grad student. I inherited my green thumb from my paternal grandfather, who maintained a beautiful two acre vegetable garden well into his eighties. Right now, I have the enjoyment but not the time or the space to achieve that kind of a garden, but I hope to have his kind of success on a small scale someday.

Without a paddle.

We've received a bit over six inches of rain since early Sunday morning. The sun finally appeared this afternoon, but we stand a good chance of thunderstorms again tonight. I took a walk around the yard to survey the damage. I've definitely got some work to do. One of my gutters was clogged and became so heavy with rain and debris that it pulled away from the house. The pins on the downspout end of the gutter pulled free from the siding! I also had quite a pond developing in the front yard this… Continue

Hello Paige
I will check with my wife when she gets back from vacation about the varieties in the rock garden . I do the seeds and the bulbs and she does the plants.

Paige, thanks, we have eaten the pineapple and it was great. Very juicy and sweet. Looking forward to more pineapples next summer.

You know, that's a good question.
Had to ask my husband. It's his family home. Even had to use a metric conversion website cause stuff like that still doesn't compute in my head. *lol* Comes out to be close to 11,000 sq. feet total. Take out the house and that leaves somewhere around 650 sq. feet of yard and garden. Still doesn't mean much to me. Just know that I have room to play around. That will be the saddest part about moving back to the states in a couple years. No way I'll have this much room again.

Hello Paige!
Thanks for the comments about my photos. I love gardening and love taking pictures of what's going on in the garden. It's nice sharing those things with people who might not think I'm totally nuts for being obsessed with all things green! *lol*
