Which one contaminates? Or is it both? I'm interested in knowing more about that!

Nick, This was great advice. I'm just saying "Ouch!" and pulling away. It seems a lot more effective than a little swat on the nose and saying "Don't bite!" She seems to associate the "Ouch" reaction to the bite much better than the "Don't bite!"

The bread looked great. I have to second Paul's question: I have some questions: What purpose does leaving a piece of the dough in the container serve? I know there are sour doughs and such that have organisms that give flavor to the bread, do...

This is it: Solarcone Kitchen waste digester. There are also these, which I am seriously considering: Doggie Dooley pet waste digester.

At the Illinois Alternative Energy fair a couple of years ago, someone had a product they were pitching. I don't think it was intended to be used to make compost, but rather as a "trash eater". You buried it into the ground and dropped stuff in th...

Crate training can be hard work. I have a few thoughts that you might find useful. First, I would advise against sleeping on the floor with the dog. In the wild, a pack of dogs' pecking order is reflected in the how high up they sleep, i.e. pack ...

Hey Mike, If I've learned one thing about dog ownership and training, it's that you'll achieve the best results when you interact with your dog in a way that's natural to them. When dogs grow up in their litters, they learn what type of play is a...

There are these videos where someone catches a shark and it's bouncing around on the deck of a boat, rolling around and biting in random directions. It's crazy and scary because if they get their hands close theres a chance of losing them! So far...

Backyard Shed

I came home a few nights ago and found my tape measure on the kitchen counter. I asked my wife why it was out and she told me that my twelve year old son used it and needed to talk to me.

He's decided that we need a shed in the backyard. I asked if we needed a shed, or if he needed a shed. He said that I could use it too, but we would need to make it bigger if I was going to use it. He needs room for it to be his fort and he can't have my snowblower taking up all of the space.

Building a shed… Continue

Planting in February?

I'm down to the last of this past year's garlic harvest. I loved it, but unfortunately, I didn't get another round in the ground this fall. I have a few small heads and four nice big heads left.

A lot of the leftover cloves are just beginning to sprout and I think it may have been enough to go through the necessary freezing phase in the very cold garage. The ground was soft so I planted it today to see what happens.

The worst that can happen is that I lose four heads of garlic and I got a litt… Continue

Arthur BBQ Competition

For some reason I couldn't get it together enough to go pick up a CD from a friend of mine which contained all of the pictures from the Arthur BBQ Competition. It's taken me over a month, but I've been able to get them, sift through them, and post them here.

Thus begins my photo essay of the trip. The photos are a little bigger than I normally like to submit, but after taking all of the time to submit the photos, I didn't want to have to go back around and do it again.… Continue

BBQ Competition, Arthur Illinois

For the past few years now, I've been traveling to the Central Illinois Braggin Rights BBQ Competition in Arthur, Il. Here's the web site:

http://www.cibr-bbq.com/

The first year I traveled down with my neighbor and team captain, Brian, with a pickup truck full of junk and a $200 smoker bought from Menard's.

Brian moved to St. Louis and has been really upping his game over the years. The first year he would have died of hypothermia without me. This year, I don't have to bring anything, he's g… Continue

Learning to be a better cook

About a year ago I decided to really spend time learning to be a better cook. To a great extent, I have Eric to thank. He made a few things that looked really great and were easy. It was what I needed to try and bring my game up a level.

Since then, I’ve read countless articles on the… Continue

Hey Mike. I added a reply to your bread and butter pickles question. I did some research over the last couple of days, I hope it helps.

And btw, thanks for adding me. ;)

Check out my latest blog addition. Some of my vegetables are in.

Let me know how the potatoes from the grocer work out. Like I told Eric, I bought a pound of Kennebec seed potatoes from my local feed store for all of 60 cents.

Keep me posted.

Okay Mike, I can't tolerate anyone feeling left out of anything...trauma from childhood and all...so; I switched the group to Midwesterners so you wouldn't have to feel left out. :)
