Ugh. It was not a great canning year. No tomatoes (thank you, blight), but lots of applesauce, dried leeks, canned wild blackberry jam and preserves, canned rhubarb chutney, and both canned and frozen blueberries. I have potatoes hilled outside, c...

I love kimchi! Great idea!

Why not try preserving some of the greens as kimchi? In korea they make a lot of kimchi to last the winter, and after it starts to ferment leave it in a cold refrigerator. If it gets too sour you can always make soup, or kimchi pancakes, or kimchi...

In the deep midwinter, I am getting tired of root vegetables. I can only cook rutabagas, turnips, parsnips, carrots, and potatoes so many different ways. Roasted, pureed, French fried, buttered, braised, whizzed into soup, I’ve exhausted my reper...

I can a lot during the summer, and of course it counts! The only hitch is that this summer's tomato crop went into the burn pile thanks to the blight, and other concerns cut down my time in the garden this year. I normally have over 100 quarts of ...

The Turnip Truck (a chapter from last winter)

Well let me know when the book comes out. But you know if you feel like you are not getting anywhere with the book people. I found this article interesting to read http://reviews.cnet.com/self-publishing/
Maybe they should have something like pay to read a blog ooh one better a yearly fee to read the blog. You could make more money than just on the org book. Sorry I am rambling. LMK

Hi Jess,

Just to let you know we really enjoy your blog posts here in NC. This year we are going to get some chickens and try to raise a flock. We admire you for what you have accomplished. That is a truly beautiful area you live in although the winters are harsh. Here in nc where we live spring is near, the frogs are peeping in our front yard pond, wood ducks are starting to stake out their nests. Our plum tree's are blooming, pear tree's are blooming. And guess what we are expecting 6 inches of snow and one inch of ice tonight.

In 2004 my two sons hiked the Appalichian trail starting in North Ga and finishing at Mount Katahdin Maine, 2,174 miles of backpacking. They both mentioned in their online journal the place I think is near you. One place was a local swimming hole where local kids were jumping off a bridge and an old country store where they stopped to re-supply, I'm pretty sure it was the Lyme Country store, Anyway if I can dig out the photo's I'll post them.

Again we enjoy your posts
