I'm a lecturer on the Transitions course at GCNS in Glasgow. We have a citizenship class that has reclaimed two disused flowerbeds in the city and we're growing a butterfly garden and veg, along with wildflowers and whatever else we can think of.

An allotment that MUST be saved

The Scottish Allotments and Gardens Society has picked up the story on vandalism at our allotment:

An Allotment that MUST be saved

The Oatlands Leisure Gardens have been in their current site, Elmfoot Street in the Gorbals Glasgow, since the late 1980s. Funding was received from the EU and Land and Environmental Services set up two school plots with disabled access, raised beds and a polytunnel. These two plots were allocated to Richmon… Continue

Wheat!

The students planted wheat today. The Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens sent us a free pack of wheat to grow, so today Louise got the students out to plant it. We'll keep you posted as to how it goes.

New space at allotment!

The Transitions course has just been given a spot at the Oatlands Allotments and Leisure Gardens here in Glasgow. For those of you outside the UK, allotments are community gardens. Harvesting taters video

I've put up a new video showing the potatoes being harvested, you can see it here: http://green-house.tv/profile/DonMacKeen. I've tried putting it up on the greenhouse video page but have had no luck.

Any chance I can join the Gardeners of Scotland??? I don't exactly qualify as I am 30 miles south of Newcastle but feel more affinity with the Scots than the blummin' Southerners.

Hey Don,

Regarding the butterflies - we planted butterfly bushes (I believe the "real" name is Buddleia) - definitely a hit with the butterflies and the hummingbirds.

Have a nice weekend,
Matt
