update - or excuses

It's been about forever since I've updated my blog. Suffice to say, life has been pretty insane lately. I'll try to post another tour of the garden around mid-month. But, in the interim, a couple of things to keep an eye out for:

On June 20 (the day between my birthday and the solstice) I had a garden party/pitch in recital. Simple rules - either bring a side dish, or a piece of music to perform. Bonus points for your side dish being made from local ingredients. No ties, and no need for the mus… Continue

Bean Trellis & Veggie Garden Update

It's amazing how quickly - and unexpectedly! - the garden can go from an overwhelming amount of work to largely done and just a few minor things left.

I finally erected the massively overbuilt bean trellis on Saturday and Sunday. I nearly finished Saturday in the dark, but had actually put one assembly in backwards and had to dig it back out of the ground. There were several reasons I thought it would be harder than it was based on the geometry of the garden and the way I built the trellis. But… Continue

Putting the Pot in Taters: Episode II

Man, have things been uber-busy lately! Lots has been going on in the garden, much of it not horribly wonderful. At the same time, we're at the peak of ceremony season at work, which will keep a band director hopping. And, I've been trying to squeeze in as much work on my massively overbuilt bean trellis as possible. Hopefully it'll be erected Saturday. Oh, and I've misplaced my camera, so no photos...

Meanwhile, I thought it might be good to update folks about my… Continue

Compost arrives & garden overview

It's been a while since I gave an overview of what's up in the garden right now. I generally don't have to be in to work on Thursdays until 11:30, which is nice (but I have to be there until 10:30, which isn't), and so often use that as time to work in the garden. But this morning its raining pretty hard. Thus, with the time of explosive growth just starting, I thought now might be a good time to wander out with a camera and take a few snapshots of what's up.

I'm a Mass Murderer

Sometimes, gardening just isn't all that fun.

Like this morning - after a brutal parents' weekend at work, where I didn't get to sit down for 4 days, I gave my students their first rehearsal off this week as a reward for performing well, and continually. A far more intense schedule than many professional musicians would handle well, but high school kids don't realize what they're doing is impossible. The side effect of that, though, is I also didn't have to be in until shortly before 9:00.

About the Flying Ghost project for Halloween... Yes it is "outside", but protected. I have an open porch where the motor frame is mounted from the roof. The unit uses a 2 RPM motor with aluminum arms that support the wires that go to the ghost's head and arms. I have another FG mounted under an arbor where I cover the roof of the arbor with thick plastic to protect it from the elements.
The ghost is made from styrofoam head, LED lights (I wired into the eyes), coat hanger wire, several yards of tulle cloth. It is a favorite with the Halloweeners.

Hi Chad,
love the blog and photos, an inspiration!
this time of the year it's hard to find time to post all the goings on in the garden and around the homestead.

Chad, feel free to add some of the local resources for Gardeners and diy'ers for your area. Someone may be interested.

I like your raised boxes. Did you get the idea from the "Square Foot Gardening" book?

It's called.... cropping the photo so the weeds don't show. LOL
Hey, I haven't been keeping up with the group... I did some editing this evening. Are you in Indiana? Or Illinois? Doesn't matter... I was just wondering?

Here's another something to try, that I read just a few minutes ago while reading John Logsdon's Small-Scale Grain Raising (I'm thinking about adding a "bulk-staples" patch to the garden, that will probably have a 3-year rotation - wheat, corn (or...

I usually soak my beans overnight, then simmer them in the slow cooker all day. I get good results that way. I usually start around 7:00 and they're tender and ready for soup by 4 (probably earlier, but I'm never home that soon). I don't really li...

Yes, they'll be soft and mushy. I'm not a canned carrot fan. I'd try storing them in the ground, right where they're growing. Let 'em grow until it gets cold. Then, cover them with a layer of something like row cover, landscape fabric, cardboard,...

If it's late blight, which is the same pathogen that caused the Irish potato famine, you absolutely need to destroy the infected plant(s). There is no treatment for a plant once infected that remains effective. Worth noting - late blight is rampa...

It sounds like it might be verticillium or fuscarium wilt. Pull it, burn or toss it (NOT compost it), and grow something other than tomatoes (or other nightshades) in that area for at least the next 5 years.

It will get you a lot better chance, anyway. Note that "regularly" does not necessarily mean frequently. You still want to provide the equivalent of 1" of rainfall a week for most crops. If you water too frequently, your plants will be shallow roo...

Indeed, we were about 2 or 3 days from the nearest trail (which we hadn't used), and 20 days into our trip when I made these. Part of the brown color is because I used 1/2 or maybe 3/4 whole wheat flour, and brown sugar, in the dough, because I li...
